Republican Poll: Condoleezza Rice Top Pick for VP

Condoleezza Rice
From hotair.com - Of certain select potential vice presidential running mates for Mitt Romney, Condoleezza Rice is by far the most popular among Republicans and it’s not even close, according to a CNN/ORC poll. Rice boasts an approval rating of 80 percent, leading Rick Santorum, whose favorability stands at 65 percent, by 15 points. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie follows with 55 percent, while Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan are one point apart at 44 percent and 43 percent respectively. Furthermore, Rice pulled a plurality of support — or 26 percent — in answer to the explicit question, “Of the people I just mentioned, which one would you most like to see Mitt Romney choose as his vice presidential running mate … ?” The rest of the list corresponded with the favorability ratings, as well, with 21 percent saying they hope Romney will choose Santorum, 14 percent Christie, 14 percent Rubio and just 8 percent Ryan. Among Tea Partiers, though, it’s a slightly different story. While 85 percent of Tea Partiers have a favorable opinion of her, she isn’t the Tea Party pick for VP. A plurality — 22 percent — picked Rubio, another 18 percent selected Christie and 16 percent selected Rice.  More here

Sunland Park Councilors Appoint New Mayor

From therepublic.com - City councilors in the troubled New Mexico border city of Sunland Park have appointed a new mayor. By a 3-2 vote with one abstention Wednesday night, the council selected 24-year-old Javier Perea. He'll be sworn in next week in the council's next scheduled session. Former Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Salinas won the election in March, but was barred from taking office under the terms of his release from jail. The 28-year-old Salinas was charged before the election with trying to force fellow candidate Gerardo Hernandez from the race with a secretly recorded video of him getting a lap dance from a topless woman. Hernandez has filed an appeal, claiming there was fraud in the absentee ballot. If a judge sides with Hernandez, the mayor's seat could be declared vacant again.

Quote of the Day

NewsNM note (Spence) In the wake of the widening GSA waste and fraud scandal, so called government "investments" in a stream of bankrupt green energy companies, and trillions of dollars in "stimulus" funds gone, the quote of the day comes from David Burge at the Iowa Hawk Blog:
"Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack Obama does with mine."

New Shrimp-Like Species Found in NM Cave

KUNMScientists have discovered a new tiny shrimp-like species in a gypsum cave in southeastern New Mexico, only a few dozen miles from the famous caves at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Bureau of Land Management cave expert Jim Goodbar says the species of amphipod was previously unknown before being discovered about a month ago during a biological inventory. It was found in a subterranean pond a couple hundred feet down a cave passage that is no more than 80 feet from the surface. The new species has not been named, but officials say it has been classified as part of the Parabogidiella genus. Goodbar says it's not often a new species is discovered. He says there's still not a lot that's known about what's beneath the Earth's surface. Read More News New Mexico
