Governor defends Drunkbuster hotline

New Mexico State Police and Governor Susana Martinez are defending the Drunkbusters hotline, after October statistics were released.
Last month, 1,339 calls came into #DWI. Out of those tips, law enforcement made contact with 90 of the reported drivers. That resulted in 16 DWI arrests for October from the program.
State Police Lt. Robert McDonald admits the numbers are misleading. He says the numbers that are important are the arrests made every year from the program. The governor stressed it's important to get drunk drivers off the streets in any way possible.
There has also been a recent change for the program. Officers responding to a tip can now call the person who reported the driver directly to get more information. There is also an app available for iPhone and Android smartphones. To find it, search ENDWI in your app marketplace.

Court overturns water rights drought ruling

The New Mexico Supreme Court has overturned a lower court ruling that limited the ability of the state's top water official to manage water rights in times of severe drought.
The case centers on a program that was intended to speed up the determination of industry, agricultural and municipal water entitlements. The Court of Appeals ruled in 2010 that the Office of the State Engineer had overstepped its legal authority by adopting the program.
The Supreme Court overturned that ruling Thursday, saying the state Legislature had delegated authority to the state engineer to put in place the water administration regulations.

NM jury awards man nearly $4 million in Balloon Fiesta accident

A New Mexico jury has awarded a Florida man $3.86 million in damages after he was injured in a 2009 hot air balloon accident in Albuquerque
Jurors on Thursday found that the pilot acted recklessly and the Balloon Fiesta organization's negligence led to an accident where Thomas Hurd suffered debilitating injuries.
The Albuquerque Journal  says pilot Timmerly Eklund is responsible for 70 percent of the judgment and the fiesta 30 percent. The 72-year-old Hurd, from Port Charlotte, Fla., was a passenger in Eklund's balloon on Oct. 5, 2009.

Gun store receives death threats amid coyote hunt

The heat is on a Los Lunas gun store for moving ahead with a controversial coyote hunting contest.

Gunhawk Firearms announced last week it would take over sponsorship of the contest after an Albuquerque store dropped out. Since then, Gunhawk management acknowledges there has been a lot of public input, not all of it positive. Death threats were recently posted on the store's FaceBook page.
Owner Mark Chavez. Says despite the threats, around 100 teams of 2-people each have signed up.  He also says the vast majority of input from the local community, especially farmers and ranchers, has been positive.
This week, an online petition surfaced opposing the hunt.  More than 13,000 signatures were collected as of late Thursday night.

Officials considering proposal to ban cell phone use in state vehicles

New Mexico officials are considering an outright ban on the use of cell phones in state vehicles.

The proposal is among nearly 50 changes that the General Services Department is considering implementing for state-owned vehicle use.
Drivers of state-owned vehicles can now use a hands-free device to talk while driving. But General Services Secretary Ed Burckle told the Albuquerque Journal Wednesday that studies suggest a complete ban on cellphone use while driving would likely decrease the number of accidents.
Other proposed changes include a complete ban on private use of state vehicles and restrictions on gas card use.
