State Employees Share Only 23% of Rising Healthcare Premium Costs to the State

The skyrocketing cost of healthcare over the last three years has forced Governor Susana Martinez to scramble for ways to cover state employee benefits. It looks like there will be a 15 percent increase in premiums coming for health insurance that covers about 73,000 state and local government workers and their dependents.
To fill most of the gap, the General Services Department will ask the Legislature for $10 million next year to cover higher rates proposed for government agencies. Increases in state worker premiums will only cover about 23% of the increase that is likely to be implemented in the fiscal year starting July 2013.
While businesses and individuals in the private sector have paid for health insurance premium hikes every year since 2007, New Mexico state government worker's costs have remained unchanged for those five years.

Martinez Estimates $270 Million Revenue Surplus

Susana Martinez and Chuck Franco on Inauguration Day
When Susana Martinez took the oath of office as governor of New Mexico in 2011 she inherited a fiscal disaster. For the previous eight years her predecessor, Bill Richardson and the Democrat-controlled legislature spent, spent, and spent some more. They had also done their best to run off the state's breadwinning oil and gas producers leaving revenue sources in doubt.
Martinez promised a science-based common sense approach to energy policy and basic spending discipline when she took office. Apparently the governor has already delivered on those promises.
According a report by the Associated Press earlier today new financial forecasts of state tax revenues are $270 million above what was originally projected to be collected. Budget officials within the Martinez administration revealed the latest revenue projections to the Legislative Finance Committee during a meeting in Angel Fire earlier today. This good fiscal and political news for Martinez comes on the heels of a trip the governor will be making to Tampa, Florida early next week. There she is set make a prime time speech at the Republcan National Convention. Martinez is slated to address the GOP faithful just before keynote speaker Chris Christie takes the podium.

Sowell on 2016: "The Audience Was Riveted"

Thomas Sowell
Townhall - Years, and sometimes decades, pass between my visits to movie theaters. But I drove 30 miles to see the movie "2016," based on Dinesh D'Souza's best-selling book, "The Roots of Obama's Rage." Where I live is so politically correct that such a movie would not even be mentioned, much less shown.
Every seat in the theater was filled, even though there had been an earlier showing that day, and more showings were scheduled for the rest of the afternoon and evening. I had to sit on a staircase in the balcony, but it was worth it.
The audience was riveted. You could barely hear a sound from them, or detect a movement, and certainly not smell popcorn. Yet the movie had no bombast, no violence, no sex and no spectacular visual effects.
The documentary itself was fascinating, as Dinesh D'Souza presented the story of Barack Obama's life and view of the world, in a very conversational sort of way, illustrating it with visits to people and places around the world that played a role in the way Obama's ideas and beliefs evolved.
