It takes special training to be a lawyer. And all freedom loving Americans realize that every single defendant in our country is entitled to a vigorous defense, even those defendants caught attempting to commit mass murder. However, while the training attorneys undergo helps prepare them for advocacy of accused individuals, it does not best train them to select best practices for society. Each time we read a story like this one (read here) we are reminded that lawyers dominate our existence through gross over-representation in all three branches of government. Attorneys have a role to play in our country. Dominating the formation of public policies should not be the primary function of this profession.
