Aggie Baseball Continues to Roll

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The 25th ranked New Mexico State baseball swept a doubleheader with Sacramento State yesterday. The scores were 16-4 and 6-1 in games played at John Smith Field, Saturday.
The Aggies have now won 18 of their last 19 games while improving to 27-9 on the year and 4-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Hornets fell to 17-18 overall and 2-3 in league play. Junior left-hander Ryan Beck was the winning pitcher in game one and is now 4-1 on the year after going five innings and striking out four. He gave up the four runs, but only two of them were earned as NM State committed an error in the fifth inning.
Rocky Ward
Senior shortstop Zach Voight had a big game going 4-of-5 with two runs scored and seven RBI’s. Included in his four-hit game was a grand-slam in the sixth inning, his sixth home run of the year. Junior catcher Zac Fisher, who entered the game in the top three nationally for RBI’s, finished the game with three more going 3-of-5, with two doubles.
"We were really good all the way around today. It was a dominant offensive performance in game one and in game two we put up six runs in the first inning and let Adam Mott take it the rest of the way," head coach Rocky Ward said. "Sacramento played good, quality defense and you have to give them credit for that."
The Aggies take on Sacramento State in the third game of the series today at 2pm (MT). The game is scheduled to air on KSNM AM 570.

Donor Pulls $1M Donation For New Field

From krqe.com -One of the largest donors in the effort to renovate the University of New Mexico’s baseball field has pulled his money out of the project after being “dragged through the mud.”  Johnny Cope had hoped to sit in the newly renovated field, named after him, and enjoy a Lobo baseball game but Governor Martinez’s pressure to keep his name off the field has prompted Cope to withdraw his donations from the project.  More News New Mexico

NCAA and BCS are Corrupt

The Alabama, Houston, Boise State, LSU, and Oklahoma State football programs have something in common. Each finished their seasons with one loss. Five weeks ago, at the end of the regular college football season, there was enough time to invite the top 32 teams to a national championship playoff and determine a genuine National Champion. Instead fans are asked to recognize a faux national champion. Nothing could be less American.
Instead of a fair system, the NCAA colludes with an inherently corrupt BCS organization. Together these two bodies conspire each year to preserve an antiquated bowl system and funnel dollars to large established conferences. Their schemes prevent up and coming football programs like Boise State and Houston from EVER competing for their mythical championship. And they also force up and coming programs to abandon their conferences and traditional regional rivalries for east or west coast conferences. The process is as anti-free market and totalitarian as any dictatorship. The NCAA and BCS should not be supported nor should their "declared champion" be recognized. All media outlets engaging in "debates" about which of the one-loss teams are the best in the nation rather than demanding a playoff contribute to institutionalized corruption.

Lobos Blow NMSU Away

Steve Alford
LAS CRUCES – The rout was on from the opening tip. Steve Alford's UNM Lobos absolutely crushed Marvin Menzies NMSU Aggies last night at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces. Up by 34 points with a little more than 7 minutes to play in the second half, the twenty point margin in the final score made the blowout seem closer than it actually was. The game that was never in much doubt all night and it ended with a final score of 89-69.
With the win the Lobo's basketball dominance of the Aggies under Steve Alford continues. Alford is 8-2 against the Aggies over the last ten games despite a November loss in the Pit back in November.

We Want a Playoff Now!

Sacramento Bee - Proponents of a college football playoff are launching a new national campaign aimed at taking down the BCS. The "We Want a Playoff Now" campaign was introduced Thursday on Capitol Hill. It includes the lobbying firm The Moffett Group, headed up by former Rep. Toby Moffett, D-Conn., and the communications firm, New Partners. Along with that effort, two congressmen are forming the Congressional Collegiate Sports Caucus. The congressmen, Texas Republican Joe Barton and Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, are reintroducing Barton's 2009 bill aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system. The longshot bill would ban - as unfair and deceptive - the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I football game as a national championship unless it's the outcome of a playoff. Maryland Set to Hire Mike Locksley

Mike Locksley
Baltimore Sun - Maryland is expected to hire former New Mexico coach Mike Locksley as its offensive coordinator, according to a knowledgeable source. Locksley would replace Gary Crowton. The school is negotiating the terms of Crowton's release after one season. Locksley was 2-26 at New Mexico but is known as an aggressive recruiter. He is a former Towson University player and Maryland assistant. Locksley was dismissed by New Mexico during the 2011 season. Locksley had previously served four seasons as the Illinois offensive coordinator. When he was hired by New Mexico, the Albuquerque Journal wrote that the school's athletic director "wanted the next Lobo coach be a strong recruiter and run an exciting offense." Before his Illinois job under Ron Zook, Locksley was a Florida assistant -- also under Zook. At Maryland, Locksley, 41, was the running backs coach (and later recruiting coordinator) for six years beginning in 1997. He served under coach Ron Vanderlinden and then coach Ralph Friedgen. His old Maryland bio talks about his recruiting prowess. Read full story here: News New Mexico

Gautsche hits airwaves to defend decision

From the Rio Rancho Observer - BY GARY HERRON - Cole Gautsche, the senior southpaw quarterback who led Cleveland High School to a perfect 13-0 season that ended last Saturday with a 48-28 victory over host Mayfield in the Class 5A championship game, has been taking some heat lately for his decision not to continue his career at New Mexico State University, where he had given a verbal commitment, but rather play closer to home with the University of New Mexico football team next fall. Gautsche, the Gatorade Football Player of the Year in New Mexico, was an in-studio guest Wednesday evening of Rio Ranchoan Bob Brown on his Locker Room Show on ESPN Radio, 101.7-FM. Toward the end of the interview, Gautsche said he wants to someday be a teacher and return to Cleveland, where he'd like to coach. Read more

Another Bad Weekend for Tim Tebow Haters

Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos delivered again for their "believers" with an another amazing finish yesterday after yet another very slow start against the Chicago Bears. Tebow was phenomenal in the fourth quarter and in overtime and the Broncos' tenacious defense, which held the Chicago Bears to just ten points for the entire game, produced a huge fumble recovery also in overtime to create the opportunity for the completion of the stunning comeback. After trailing the Bears 10-0 late, the Broncos won their sixth straight game, with a stirring 13-10 come-from-behind win. Matt Prater's 51-yard field goal in overtime provided the winning margin. After the game Tebow raised up from his knees and pointed to the sky. And in his first post-game interview he once again gave credit first, to his "Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." His credit to a higher power was surely much to the chagrin of the atheists and other anti-Christian Tebow haters everywhere.

Packer Fans Gobble Up Worthless Stock

CBS Market Watch - COMMENTARY  - The undefeated Green Bay Packers have scored another victory with their stock sale even though, as an investment, it's a lousy buy. Yesterday the team put up 250,000 shares for sale at $250 each and got 1,600 orders in the first 11 minutes. Pretty impressive considering it pays no dividends, the value doesn't increase and it has no resale value. So it's kind of like Greek treasury bonds. The reigning Super Bowl champion Packers made the stock offering - its first since 1997 - to raise funds for renovations at Lambeau Field, the team's home in Green Bay, Wis. The team is the U.S.'s only non-profit, community-owned major league sports team. Founded in 1919, the Packers went public in 1923 and this sale marks only the fifth stock sale in team history. The team makes no effort to hide the worthlessness of the stock. Here's the sales pitch from president and CEO Mark H. Murphy: Read full column here: News New Mexico

Another Bad Weekend for Tim Tebow Haters

Tim Tebow
San Francisco Chronicle - Minneapolis --  Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos delivered again with a strong, determined finish after a slow start. Tebow found his groove in the second half Sunday, and the Broncos' defense, which struggled for much of the game, provided a big play to match his late-game touch. Tebow passed for a season-best 202 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns to help the Broncos win their fifth straight game, 35-32 over the Minnesota Vikings on Matt Prater's 23-yard field goal as time expired. NMSU Thinking Beer and Wine Sales Again

New Mexico State University is once again contemplating the sales of beer and wine at athletic events in an effort to raise revenue for the university. Several years ago the university experimented with the idea at the Pan American Center for a couple of games. Reportedly then Governor Bill Richardson made it be known that he would be very displeased if the practice continued, so the plan, which was well-received by the fans was dropped. Ironically, the university broadcasts of Aggie games on television and radio have always included companies that sell beer and wine. Also, beer and wine can be purchased at the Fulton Center by the elite boosters during games. However, apparently these same services (and the potential for revenue streams) have not been offered to the "masses." Nobody seems sure if any adult beverages are consumed during tailgating before the games, but some reports, from seemingly reliable sources, suggest they are.

Mayfield Will Host Cleveland for Title

Last night Kirk Potter's Cleveland Storm beat crosstown rival Rio Rancho, and Mike Bradley's Mayfield Trojans put away a pesky Manzano team to advance to the championship game.
The game will be played in Las Cruces at the Field of Dreams next Saturday at 1:00pm.
