NMSU Thinking Beer and Wine Sales Again

New Mexico State University is once again contemplating the sales of beer and wine at athletic events in an effort to raise revenue for the university. Several years ago the university experimented with the idea at the Pan American Center for a couple of games. Reportedly then Governor Bill Richardson made it be known that he would be very displeased if the practice continued, so the plan, which was well-received by the fans was dropped. Ironically, the university broadcasts of Aggie games on television and radio have always included companies that sell beer and wine. Also, beer and wine can be purchased at the Fulton Center by the elite boosters during games. However, apparently these same services (and the potential for revenue streams) have not been offered to the "masses." Nobody seems sure if any adult beverages are consumed during tailgating before the games, but some reports, from seemingly reliable sources, suggest they are.

So they're thinking about ending the class warfare on alcohol consumption? Must be an economics thing. Lord knows they think they're better than us blue collar fans who pay the bills.

I am not a teetotaler. That said, lets look at NMSu somewhat scientifically. First lets assume that most people graduate HS and begin college at age 18. This would mean that for the most part the entire freshman class was 18 and thus underage for drinking. Next those 18 yr olds would be sophomores at 19 and juniors at 20 making roughly 3/4 of the average students ineligible to drink, legally.

Now, many of those attending the ball games are over 21 and may lawfully imbibe. BUT what message is sent to the 3/4 of the students who are not lawfully granted the privilege of drinking?

NM apparently has a problem with DUI. How does serving beer and wine at a college function, from which most people leave by car, help our DUI problem?

Oh, yeah, the folks at the games aren't going to drink enough to have a problem. Right!!!!
