Redistricting Trial Begins Today

Judge James Hall is presiding over a trial that will determine the boundary lines for New Mexico's three congressional districts for the next ten years. There are at least two groups of Democrats and one group of Republicans asking Judge Hall to hear their ideas for fairness. Included in the GOP parties to the lawsuit is Governor Susana Martinez. The Governor is seeking a plan that would involve the least amount of change in redrawing the lines whereas some groups that represent the ethnic Hispanic majority in the state are arguing for lines that create a minority set aside. The trial began today in Santa Fe.
