GOP Violates "Pledge"

(CNSNews.com) - When the House of Representatives voted this evening on legislation to increase the limit on the federal debt by as much as $2.4 trillion, House Republicans broke a promise included in their 2010 Pledge to America to post the text of bills online “for at least three days” before bringing them up for a vote.

“We will ensure that bills are debated and discussed in the public square by publishing the text online for at least three days before coming up for a vote in the House of Representatives,” said the Pledge to America. “No more hiding legislative language from the minority party, opponents, and the public. Legislation should be understood by all interested parties before it is voted on.” Read full story here: News New Mexico

The truth is this; they didn't want us to know they sold out for less than what they barked for. Get ready to see huge cuts in defense spending. (maybe that won't be such a bad thing) There's little or no hope the democrats and republicans will agree to another 1.4 trillion in cuts before December 1st. Hell, the budget battle is just now coming into focus in September. You can bet that too will become a political fiasco. At the end of the day the trigger device that will force across the board cuts, with half the remaining cuts automatically coming out of defense, is almost a certainty. The 6 democrats on the deficit cutting committee will insist on tax revenues as part of the cutting and naturally, the republicans will balk. After caving, in order to get some kind of deal this time, I'm betting the republicans will agree to targeted tax hikes in exchange for no further cuts in defense spending. Under the circumstances, this seems like the only way the democrats will spare the defense budget. What seems equally likely is that the democrats will insist on enough tax revenue increases (along with cuts) to keep some of their pet programs from being cut as well. The only way we'll ever get a balanced budget amendment is if Obama is thrown out of office and the senate goes to the republicans. Absent total control of both the house and the senate by conservatives, the debt will continue to climb.
