Sunland Park mayoral candidate goes to trial

A former New Mexico border town mayoral candidate accused of extortion by secretly recording an opponent receiving a lap dance is scheduled to go to trial. But an attorney for former mayor-elect Daniel Salinas says the scheduled Monday start date might not happen.

Joshua Spencer says some discovery has not been produced. The case also will go before a new judge, new prosecutor and new district attorney.
Salinas is facing nearly three dozen charges that include extortion, bribery, fraud and illegal kickbacks. Salinas has pleaded not guilty.
Former Sunland Park city manager Jaime Aguilera pleaded guilty last month to extortion and evidence-tampering charges related to the case.
