For her part, Carey Gonzales admits to watching the videos with her husband. She's now on administrative leave from her job as an educational assistant at Montezuma Elementary School. Fred Gonzales was the president of the NM Young American Football League. He was a volunteer with the league for years and served as a board member. The league removed him from the league Saturday morning and Jim Summers took over.
"We thought it was some sort of cruel prank the first words we got of this and then when we realized it wasn't a prank, we were speechless," Summers said. Fred and Carey Gonzales have two children who are now in state custody. Summers said Fred Gonzales went through multiple background checks while in the league.
"There were no red flags. We've discussed it among ourselves, and even now with the allegations, we still look back and say we don't see anything," he said. But Summers still wants to make everything available for law enforcement when it comes to this case. The league hired an independent attorney to guide the office through this time. But the league is not stopping there.
"We are going to bring an independent outside investigator to take a hard look at us and tell us where we can do things better," Summers said. The safety of children is the top priorty of the NM YAFL program, Summers wanted to ensure. He said the league will begin looking to hire the private investigator starting Monday. Read more
