Carlsbad woman arrested for using nunchucks while driving

A woman was taken to a hospital for mental evaluation after she was seen swinging nunchucks from the sunroof of her yellow mustang Wednesday evening. 

Bonnie Morris, 46, was arrested after police say she failed to stop for an officer, leading him on a slow-speed chase through Carlsbad. Officer Wayne Atchler saw Morris in her vehicle near the intersection of 6th and Church streets, where she was swinging nunchucks out the rooftop window.

She failed to stop when he tried to pull her over, leading Atchler on a path through a residential neighborhood. She then sped off toward the Artesia Highway, where she reached a speed around 65 miles per hour, police said. 

Sgt. Jason Griffin responded to the call and was able to stop Morris at mile marker 42 after spike strips were deployed.

Morris attempted to resist arrest, but was ultimately taken into custody, police said. Charges were still pending as of Thursday afternoon, police said.

The New Mexico Department of Health is participating in “Get Smart about Antibiotics” campaign that runs from November 12 through 18, 2012. 

According to the department, antibiotic resistance is one of the world's most pressing public health threats. 

The program works with healthcare facilities and providers statewide. It recognizes that a critical component in preventing healthcare-associated infections is appropriate antibiotic use. 

The Department says patients must take steps to reduce antibiotic resistance and to remember that antibiotics are of no use in treating most common viral, and even some common bacterial, upper respiratory infections.

$7 million NM home only pays $25 in property taxes

County and state officials want to know how the owner of a Los Ranchos mansion listed for sale at $7 million was billed only $25 for property taxes this year.  

Bernalillo County assessor Karen Montoya says she's trying to find out how the newly built home still is listed as vacant agricultural land. 

The state Taxation and Revenue Department sent a letter to Montoya last month pointing out the designation and noting it now had a 12,000-square-foot luxury home. 

The tax bill should be about $83,000.

A New Mexico company is selling "bad" blue, meth-looking bath salts in honor of the AMC TV show "Breaking Bad." 

The Albuquerque Journal reports that the Albuquerque-based Great Face & Body is selling a line of bath salts that look very similar to the pure meth sold on the drama show filmed in Albuquerque. The "Bathing Bad" bath salts, which are used in baths and not as illegal drugs, come in 8-ounce plastic bags. 

The move follows a similar trend by others in Albuquerque to sell products influenced by the show. One candy store is selling "Breaking Bad" meth sugar candy and a doughnut shop is selling meth doughnuts with blue candy on top.

Pearce spends Veteran's Day with troops in Sinai

United States congressman Steve Pearce spent Veteran’s Day on the Sinai Peninsula, which is where New Mexico National Guard soldiers have spent the past nine months on a peace-keeping mission on the border between Egypt and Israel.

 Pearce took a 30-hour flight to be with the troops on Veteran's Day.  Pearce served the soldiers a little taste of home, too, on his visit -- red and green chile. 

He added it's a lot like being at home because home is thinking of the soldiers and has the jobs to prove it.

NM Border Patrol outpost delayed

A new $15 million U.S. Customs and Border Patrol outpost in southern New Mexico is a year behind schedule because federal planners failed to make sure the local power co-op could provide enough electricity. 

Customs agents assigned to the border crossing in Antelope Wells are instead operating out of trailers. The project kept growing and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers didn't foresee the power needs until final construction plans were in place.

 The line is now being built after a year delay and the outpost is expected to open early next year.

Governor sends NM resources to help Sandy victims

Gov. Susana Martinez has signed an order to support the deployment of New Mexico resources to northeastern states that need help in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. 

Friday's executive order makes $200,000 available to the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to coordinate the deployment and support of New Mexico resources for relief efforts. 

The storm made landfall on the East Coast on Oct. 29 and has caused an estimated $50 billion in damages. 

The cost of sending personnel and equipment eventually will be reimbursed by the federal disaster declaration for the storm.
