The New
Mexico Department of Health is participating in “Get Smart about Antibiotics”
campaign that runs from November 12 through 18, 2012.
According to the department, antibiotic resistance is
one of the world's most pressing public health threats.
The program works with
healthcare facilities and providers statewide. It recognizes that a critical
component in preventing healthcare-associated infections is appropriate
antibiotic use.
The Department says patients must take steps to reduce
antibiotic resistance and to remember that antibiotics are of no use in
treating most common viral, and even some common bacterial, upper respiratory
infections.
