Police unveil method to destroy guns, ammunition

From KOAT-TV.com - ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —It takes more than just dumping a gun into a trash bin to properly dispose of it.Members of the Albuquerque Police Department use a machine called a gun shear to destroy unwanted weapons, including sawed-off shotguns and machine guns.
The gun shear chops the weapon into pieces. The metal scrap is then recycled. When it comes to ammunition, officers dispose of bullets using an incinerator, which handles up to 50 pounds of ammunition at a time. "(The incinerator) is propane-operated. We light it up, (and) it takes approximately 30 minutes to do its business, with a 10-minute cool down. What you have left is the casings, and also the lead that comes out from the incinerator and all of this is recyclable," Albuquerque Police Department Lt. Arturo Gonzalez said.
The incinerator can also destroy fireworks. Read more
