Juárez gets Mexico’s clean city award

From Rio Grande Digital - Juárez has been named Mexico’s cleanest city by the Azteca Foundation, according to a city news release and various Juárez media reports. Mayor Héctor “Teto” Murguía traveled last week to Mexico City to collect the award given by the philanthropic branch of the TV Azteca national television network. Juárez was chosen for the award based on a number of factors, including its ongoing efforts to keep city streets free of old tires and other debris, a new biogas plant that went into operation this year at the city landfil, its facility for shredding and recycling old tires, its handling of hazardous waste, measurement of various pollutant levels and other things. In selecting Juárez for the award, the foundation documented the projects through videos, photographs, interviews, testimonials and environmental monitoring data. The national campaign is called “Limpiemos Nuestro México,” or “We Clean Up Our Mexico.” Read more

No reference to God in president's T-Day speech

NewsNM: Swickard - I have no problem with the President not mentioning God because I do not believe that he believes. The only problem is for him to act like a non-Christian and keep telling us he is. From the Las Vegas Review Journal blogs - by Sherman Frederick - President Barack Obama delivered his weekly address with a speech entitled: “On Thanksgiving, Grateful for the Men and Women Who Defend Our Country.” In the text of his speech, he referred to Thanksgiving as a "celebration of community." Mayfield Will Host Cleveland for Title

Both teams came back from 14-0 deficits in the semi-fials. Both teams faced each other last year in the playoffs. Both teams were seeded at the top of the rankings in New Mexico's Class 5-A.

Last night Kirk Potter's Cleveland Storm beat crosstown rival Rio Rancho, and Mike Bradley's Mayfield Trojans put away a pesky Manzano team to advance to the championship game.

The game will be played in Las Cruces at the Field of Dreams next Saturday at 1:00pm.

Snubbed by GOP, Johnson Weighs Libertarian Run

KOB TV - Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson is thinking about pulling out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination and switching to another party. Johnson said he is considering running for the Libertarian Party nomination, to keep his dark horse candidacy alive and keep his issues on the table. He told our media partners at the Santa Fe New Mexican that he feels "abandoned" by the Republican Party. Johnson said the Libertarians have made "overtures" and that he thinks he would have a fair chance to win their nomination. Johnson has been left out of all but two of the Republican presidential debates, and lately the polls don't include his name. "It's the Gary Johnson rule," he said back in September. "They get together and they decide what rule do we have to come up with to just exclude Gary Johnson and that's the rule they apply." Ynet - A Muslim Brotherhood rally in Cairo's most prominent mosque Friday turned into a venomous anti-Israel protest, with attendants vowing to "one day kill all Jews." Some 5,000 people joined the rally, called to promote the "battle against Jerusalem's Judaization." The event coincided with the anniversary of the United Nations' partition plan in 1947, which called for the establishment of a Jewish state.
However, most worshippers who prayed at the mosque Friday quickly left it before the Muslim Brotherhood's rally got underway. A group spokesman urged attendants to remain for the protest, asking them not to create a bad impression for the media by leaving. Speakers at the event delivered impassioned, hateful speeches against Israel, slamming the "Zionist occupiers" and the "treacherous Jews." Upon leaving the rally, worshippers were given small flags, with Egypt's flag on one side and the Palestinian flag on the other, as well as maps of Jerusalem's Old City detailing where "Zionists are aiming to change Jerusalem's Muslim character." Udall Favors Small Retailers

Senator Tom Udall seems to draw a distinction between "small" businesses and medium or larger sized businesses. He says, "New Mexico's small businesses are the backbone of our economy." Then he offers facts to back up the assertion: "According to the Small Business Administration, there are more than 150,000 small businesses in our state, accounting for more than 55 percent of our private sector jobs."

Finally Udall issues a plea to his constituents: "This holiday season, we have a real opportunity to support our local, independently owned businesses. In Congress, I've cosponsored a resolution to designate the Saturday after Thanksgiving -- November 26, 2011 -- as "Small Business Saturday." If you're shopping the weekend after Thanksgiving, I encourage you to make a visit to a local small business. This Saturday, I'm going to shop at a small business in New Mexico. Will you?"

Rep. Giffords Serves Armed Forces on Thanksgiving

(Reuters) - Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords served a Thanksgiving meal on Thursday to Air Force personnel in her first constituent event since she was shot in the head in January, her office said. Giffords dished out turkey with tongs as she stood between Brigadier General Jon Norman and her husband Mark Kelly, said Giffords' spokesman Mark Kimble. The event at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base was expected to draw more than 400 people, mostly U.S. Air Force personnel, retired service members and their families.
Giffords was shot on January 8 at an event for constituents at a Tucson supermarket. College dropout Jared Loughner has been charged in the shooting spree that killed six people and wounded 13, including Giffords.
She is living in Houston, where she is receiving therapy. She arrived in Tucson on Tuesday to spend the holiday with friends and family. Base officials had originally invited a member of Giffords' staff to take part in the annual Thanksgiving dinner, but when Giffords heard of it she decided to go herself, her office said. Low Level Flight Hearing Held

Capitol Report New Mexico - The US Air Force says its pilots need to train at low altitudes to prepare them for worldwide operations and an area covering parts of New Mexico and southwestern Colorado figures to be the best location for the Special Operations Wing to practice. But there’s been vocal opposition, especially from some people who live in Taos and Las Vegas, New Mexico who think the plan is “wasteful, environmentally destructive” and unnecessary. A group called the Peaceful Skies Coalition of New Mexico and Colorado calls for state and federal funding bans and say “this is the time to scale back militarism and save our democracy.” On Wednesday (Nov. 23), a team of Air Force personnel from Cannon Air Force Base outside Clovis, where the aircrafts will take off and land, appeared before the Military and Veterans Affais Committee at the Roundhouse.
