Santa Fe New Mexican.com - Gov. Susana Martinez proposes expanding state law to require DNA samples from people arrested for any felony. Martinez made the announcement Monday at a news conference on her first business day as governor. She also reversed a decision by former Gov. Bill Richardson's administration to move a state DNA center to Santa Fe. Martinez directed that equipment be returned to Albuquerque. She previously promised to take the action. She will ask the Legislature to broaden a DNA sampling requirement enacted in 2006. It's called "Katie's Law" in memory of Kathryn "Katie" Sepich, a New Mexico State University student who was raped and killed in 2003. Currently, DNA samples are required for those arrested of some felonies, such as murder, kidnapping and sex offenses.
