Lizard Wars: Obama's Fish and Wildlife Officials in Eddy and Chaves County Next Week

Roswell, NM (September 1, 2011) Congressman Steve Pearce encourages the public to express their concern for the jobs that will be lost as a result of the proposed listing of the Dunes Sagebrush Lizard on the endangered species list in two meetings next week. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) officials plan to meet with the Eddy County Commission at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 6th, at the Pecos River Village Conference Center’s Carousel House located at 711 Muscatel Ave in Carlsbad. FWS officials also plan to meet with the Chaves County Commission on Thursday, September 8th, at the Chaves County Administration Building located at #1 St. Mary’s Place, in Roswell at 5:30 pm.
Both county commissions have passed resolutions against the listing of the lizard as an endangered species. In April, Rep. Pearce joined over 700 New Mexicans at a rally opposing the listing that has drawn national attention. The species is already protected by Candidate Conservation Agreements, which Congressman Pearce has supported as a commonsense approach to protect both the species and New Mexico’s jobs in this difficult economic climate.
