Commentary by Michael Swickard, Ph.D. - Two hot-button issues in New Mexico are related to one core question: what precision is necessary for the state government to “Know” the identity of people? We must address the “Certainty” question before exploring “How to” issues such as: with a photo. The precision necessary could range from allowing the government to take a person’s word as to their identity or might require a much more rigorous approach. The two areas of contention in New Mexico are voting and driving where political advantages mute identity certainty. In all other areas New Mexico has no trouble imposing adequate requirements for identity. The State of New Mexico government must be clear as to the certainty of identification required in each situation, including if we must always have identification with us. That is the core issue our leaders must solve first. Any dialog about photo ID is wasted without understanding the certainty requirements for identification. Read column

Our servants, some folks call them legislators, but they work FOR us do not seem to understand that our system is a majority rules system. Some folks want to claim otherwise. I ask, Show me a single piece of legislation that was passed by a minority of votes.
Legislators are hired to do OUR bidding NOT their own. Legislators are required to take an oath of office and that oath is to the government AND the people of the state.
I heard on the radio this AM that police want to be able to ID folks and so want illegals to have a DL. Well if the person DOESN'T have a DL and is in a car, the person can simply be ARRESTED and held until they can prove who they are. Having a DL from NM does not mean they will have insurance OR that they will show up in court. DUH!!!!
Voting is privilege, IOT IS NOT A RIGHT regardless of how many ignorant people call it that, We grant each other as members of our society. AND as members of our society, WE have the authority to require any form of proof of identity WE wish. In a society, We the People are the bosses and We the People decide who does or does not receive the privileges conveyed by membership ibn our society. Voting is one of those privileges that We as a society restrict. AND We the People as the bosses have the authority to require that persons who show up to exercise one of our societal privileges prove that that person is allowed to do so by the rest of us, i.e. have a ID proving membership in our society.
N.B. The powers of the courts come FROM US. The judges answer TO US. All elected and hired public folks work FOR US. They do OUR bidding. Of course, it's not going down that way and too many of those folks who are supposed to do what WE want are forcing they own ideas on us. That is our fault because we don't fire them whenever they get out of line.
So, Illegals have already broken the law. [Try going down to Mexico illegally and see where it gets you.] Illegals are not accepted members of our society. In order to become an accepted member and to earn the privilege membership conveys, one must follow the "rules"/"laws". Starting off by breaking the law does not provide the rest of us with good feelings about the person.
Millions of immigrants have come and will come to the US by following the rules. Why should these folks be granted the gift of citizenship and all the associated privileges without following the rules?
