McCamley: Hall’s refusal to debate is "a shame"

Bill McCamley
From NMPolitics.net - District 5 Public Regulation candidate Bill McCamley says he’s disappointed that his opponent is refusing to debate him several times before the Nov. 2 election. “It’s a shame that Mr. (Ben) Hall is refusing to interact with me. A series of debates would have educated the public both about the PRC and where we stand on its issues,” McCamley said in a news release. “If he won’t engage with me during the campaign, what does that say about his ability to be effective in Santa Fe, where there is a constant need to communicate and converse in order to protect the public?” “I stand ready to discuss creating accountability and trust at the PRC with him should he change his mind,” McCamley said. Job Creation - Let a Thousand Regulators Bloom

Anyone who thought the battle over Wall Street reform ended with passage of the Dodd-Frank Act and President Barack Obama's July 21 signature hasn't seen Kayla Gillan's whiteboard. Gillan, the deputy chief of staff to Securities & Exchange Commission Chairman Mary L. Schapiro, is in charge of coordinating the commission's implementation campaign, and she's covered her office whiteboard with dense, color-coded columns of tasks and deadlines that have already spilled over to some adjacent poster boards. There is little time to spare. A rule requiring the registration of financial advisers to municipal governments is due on Oct. 1, and myriad others must follow in quick succession. While hotly contested issues like limits on banks' proprietary trading and a new consumer protection agency got most of the attention during the financial overhaul debate, the SEC alone will be issuing some 100 rules covering derivatives, hedge funds, asset-backed securities, and executive pay. The agency needs to hire 25 examiners right away for a new office of credit-rating agency oversight. Read more here:

J.P. Morgan Said to be Shutting Down Trading Desk

JPMorgan Chase & Co., the second- largest U.S. lender by assets, told traders who bet on commodities for the firm’s account that their unit will be closed as the company begins to shut down all of its proprietary trading, according to a person briefed on the matter. The bank eventually will end all proprietary trading to comply with new U.S. curbs on investment banks, said the person, who asked not to be identified because JPMorgan’s decision isn’t public. The New York-based bank will shut proprietary trading in fixed-income and equities later, the person said. Closing the proprietary trading desk for commodities affects fewer than 20 traders, including one in the U.S. and the rest in the U.K., the person said. The unit is based in London, and traders there were given notice on Aug. 27 that their jobs may be in jeopardy as required by U.K. law, according to the person. Read more here:

Amity Shlaes - Governors Compete

Amity Shlaes
Governors in the U.S. don’t usually brawl, but this year seems to be the exception. When Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick proudly scheduled a two-day sales-tax holiday for his citizens this month, just in time for back-to-school shopping, Governor John Lynch of New Hampshire punched back with a reminder that New Hampshire levies no sales tax at all. To rub it in, Governor Lynch travelled to Baron’s Major Brands, an appliance retailer located practically within inches of the Massachusetts state line. Citizens of Massachusetts, Lynch bellowed over the border, ought to remember that “in New Hampshire, every day is a sales-tax holiday.” A similar contest rages between Governor David Paterson of New York and Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell. The New York State legislature had a plan to treat any carried interest earned by hedge-fund employees who commute into the state as income, subject to the state’s high income-tax rates. Cal Thomas - Obama's Cronkite Moment

Walter Cronkite
Lyndon Johnson
President Obama may have experienced his Walter Cronkite moment over the economy. Responding to Cronkite's reporting from Vietnam four decades ago that the only way to end the war was by negotiating with the North Vietnamese, President Lyndon Johnson was reported (though never confirmed) to have said, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America." Now President Obama appears to have "lost" New York Times liberal economic columnist Paul Krugman. Krugman, who enthusiastically supported the president's redistributionist and stimulus plans, has bowed to the reality that they are not working. In a recent column titled "This is Not a Recovery," Krugman took issue with the president and Vice President Joe Biden that we have experienced a summer of economic recovery. "Unfortunately, that's not true," he wrote. "This isn't a recovery, in any sense that matters. And policymakers should be doing everything they can to change that fact." Read more here:

President/Media: Will Ignore Elephant in the Room

President Obama
From the El Paso Times - This city should be honored that President Barack Obama has chosen Fort Bliss to talk about the end of the war in Iraq, several political experts said on Monday. And no one in El Paso should feel slighted if the president does not talk about immigration, border security or the ongoing violence in Mexico, said Jose Villalobos, a University of Texas at El Paso political science professor. Obama will spend this morning at Fort Bliss where he will talk to the soldiers and thank them for their service in Iraq. He will leave Fort Bliss at 12:15 p.m. and go back to the White House to prepare for a nationally televised speech that will focus on the war and the military. White House officials said he is not scheduled to talk about any other issues while in El Paso. UTEP's Villalobos said that is understandable. "His visit here does beg the question of whether he will talk about border security and immigration," Villalobos said. "But I think that given the main reason for his trip here, the troop withdrawal deadline, it is understandable that he wants to focus on that and not talk about anything else." Read more here:
