Voter I.D. Laws? Surely You Jest

Talk about wasting time. Democrats in the New Mexico legislature have managed to render all efforts to make a statewide voter I.D. law pretty much irrelevant. If House Bill 577 (another voter I.D. law) were to pass when it is voted on next week, it won’t mean much. Now that the state’s practice of issuing driver’s licenses to those who have entered the country illegally will continue, it would seem almost silly to pass a voter I.D. law.
John Arthur Smith
Would the majority of Senate and House Democrats (except John Arthur Smith) now be so cynical as to pretend to be in favor of the philosophy requiring voter I.D. after making sure the issuing of bogus I.D.’s continues? In politics anything is possible. But for those plagued by a modicum of logic, knowing New Mexico identification documents will continue to be put in the hands of tens of thousands of people who are ineligible to vote, we can’t help but realize that the constitutional rights of equal protection under law have become a charade in the state we call home.
What do legitimate taxpaying residents of New Mexico think of having their own rights to cast votes being systematically diluted by all but one Democrat in the Senate (John Arthur Smith) and all but six Democrats in the House? It is hard to say, especially when the next election is still 19 months away. Will voter’s memories on this constitutional travesty be long enough to matter come November of 2012? Only the passage of time will tell. In politics, even New Mexico politics,19 months is an eternity.

Jim, You need a social security card in order to get a voter registration card. The drivers liecence is only used as proof of residence just like a heating or phone bill would be used. Two things Jim. Tell the truth and learn the facts. I would love to come on your show and be a facts checker.

I would love to know who the moron is that feels our elected officials should ignore 80% of the voters and the irrefutable fact that this 80% of the people don't want driver licenses issued to illegal aliens. Furthermore, it IS A FACT that illegal aliens are voting in New Mexico and their votes have been counted. I'll let this moron decide for himself which political party is most likely to benefit from votes cast by illegal aliens. What part of, "THE PEOPLE DON'T WANT IT", does this person and the democrats NOT get?

Here are two facts and a bonus fact for "Mr. Facts"; #1 - An overwhelming majority of New Mexico citizens are against the state issuing driver licenses to anyone who is here illegally. #2- Persons here in New Mexico, illegally, have been voting in New Mexico. Here's the BONUS fact; the issuance of New Mexico driver licenses to illegal immigrants and the fact that those who wish to vote in New Mexico aren't required to present identification at the polls contributes to the dilution and disenfranchisement of legitimate votes cast by the citizens of New Mexico. Why is there only ONE political party opposed to legislation that would eliminate this from ever happening again? It's a disgraceful position to defend and I seriously doubt this will go away anytime soon.

You don't have to be a unionized English teacher to understand the points being made by each of these writers. Fundamentally, all three of them clearly articulated what they were trying to say. Janet, when you figure out who they are, send them a grade in the mail and then send a bill the state for your after school efforts. In return, I would be happy to interpret their message and send you an "educated" explanation of what you were evidently unable to grasp. Mere words cannot express just how much we appreciate your grammatical input.

I must be part of the uneducated crowd. It makes no sense whatsoever for the State of New Mexico to issue a drivers license to citizens of Mexico who already have a Mexican drivers license. When we moved here from California my wife and I were required to surrender our California drivers license. I doubt the illegals are surrendering their Mexican drivers licenses. The only practical purpose for issuing them a drivers license is to make it easier for them to vote in states where voters aren't required to show identification and qualify for many of the benefits associated with legal citizenship. In many ways, issuing illegal immigrants a drivers license amounts to individual state sponsored amnesty. Most illegals don't pay taxes. Issuing these people a drivers license only increases the likelihood that citizens of this state and other states will, without their consent, become the benefactors of many federal and state entitlements which require possessing a state issued drivers license before someone can apply for those entitlements. Why would politicians in any state deliberately adopt policies that would make this possible?

This situation is yet another example of one political party forcing their ideological agenda down the throats of an overwhelming majority who oppose the policy of issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliens. What's the point of conducting an issue poll if elected officials take a party line position and ignore the will of the people? At what point does common sense become a priority in making policy? The downside of issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliens, of ALL nationalities, is significant and undeniable. What's in it for these politicians?
