Santa Fe Vet's post on poisoning coyote raises ire

(NewsNM - Swickard) Lots of cats and dogs go missing every day. Culprit? Coyotes, Owls and Eagles. After a majestic animal eats your best friend you may not admire them so much, eh? From the Santa Fe New Mexican.com - by Staci Matlock - A Santa Fe veterinarian drew a firestorm of protest from local animal lovers for trying to poison a coyote she believes killed Nina, her barn cat, and writing about it on Facebook last weekend. Several people called or emailed the state veterinary board to lodge complaints against Joan Moreau, veterinarian and owner of the Animal Wellness Center. Moreau declined to comment on the reaction. Her Facebook postings, initially open to the public, were restricted to friends only by Tuesday. Moreau has been a veterinarian for more than three decades. Sometime over the weekend, she posted a message saying she had gotten Nina's ashes back and was waiting for the stone memorial to bury the cat in her rose garden. Then she wrote, "The coyote that killed her will die I think in 5-7 days after it ate the beef broth basted rat poison I put out on the game trail I found. It will die minus the trauma I found on my cat ..." Read more

Keep your freaking PETS INSIDE where they BELONG and you will not have a problem with WILD animals doing what they have been doing for eons before WE ever got here and pushed them out of their rightful habitats. I certainly hope this "vet" who supposedly cares about animals is prosecuted for this. And I hope she loses her license or at the very least, her patients "families" find other, more caring people to provide medical services for them.

What kind of a vet would poisen an animal? She must know what a horrible, painful death she would be imposing. This is not someone I would want near my pet.She lacks basic qualities of compassion and wisdom. Knowing it will take the coyote 5-7 daysy to die -which she relishing-- speaks of a immature, and disturbed personality. Jane Hatch, MA

I find it interesting that Dr. Moreau is so confident she is in the right. So, based on that arrogant attitude I’d like to know her response about the estimated one billion birds that are killed every year in the United States by free ranging domestic cats let alone the millions of other species of wildlife. I’d like to hear her response to a study published in 1990 by Nico Dauphine and Robert J. Cooper from the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources in which they state, “Cats have contributed to declines and extinctions of birds worldwide and are one of the most important drivers of global bird extinctions.” If it is justified for her to kill a random coyote in revenge then it must be ok for someone else to kill her cats to avenge the killing of millions of wildlife. By the way, her claim “I've saved more animals lives than any of you can count,” does not justify the killing of another. She needs her head examined for dementia if she thinks saving a life rightfully provides her license to kill. The bunnies, mice and the coyotes are native species in the habitat where she has chosen to live. Walls and boundaries do not restrict their range in their efforts to survive. Funny thing, last time I checked Peterson’s Guide to Western Wildlife Species there was no mention of native feral cats!
