Swickard: The truth and nothing but the political truth

Commentary by Michael Swickard, Ph.D. - The truth about this election is that truth is in short supply. The media appears completely incompetent or dare I say evil when it comes to truth, as usual. At best people are distracted, if not lied to in news reports. Let us talk about the truth and nothing but the political truth. We are a Representative Republic as our founding leaders intended. Much of what the office seekers say on the campaign trail is not within the office seekers ability to effect. However, in the election to Congress there is one primary question: which party boss are you supporting, Nancy Pelosi or John Boehner? It is going to be one of those two who puts people on committees and decides which legislation will or will not be considered. In New Mexico that same question is central: which senate or house leader will you support? One person in each chamber decides the fate of bills. This last term in the New Mexico Legislature was run entirely by two men, Senator Michael Sanchez and House Speaker Ben Lujan.  Read column

More Convention Humor

Jay Leno - It is day two of the Democratic convention, and apparently they had a huge lighting problem in the convention hall today. They worked all day on it. They still couldn't get President Obama out of Bill Clinton's shadow.
The stoner comedy duo Harold and Kumar are starring in a new promo for the Democratic convention alongside President Obama, which is pretty impressive. The only other person to go from smoking pot with buddies to the White House is President Obama.
President Obama's re-election campaign said that this year they'll knock on 150 percent more doors than they did in 2008. Well, of course they will. They have to. There's so many foreclosures it's tough to tell where people live.
They announced today that they are moving President Obama's speech tomorrow night indoors, from the 74,000-seat stadium to a smaller venue due to the possibility of severe weather. See, apparently the campaign is concerned about this well-known weather phenomenon known as empty seats.

DNC a Comedy of Radical Errors

Politico - Two platform planks sparked division at the Democratic National Convention here Wednesday. Things got so bad that President Barack Obama was forced to personally intervene, ordering language mentioning God and naming Jerusalem as the rightful capital of Israel be added.
While the campaign at first said Obama had seen the language prior to the convention, it later said he did not learn of the issue until Wednesday morning, when he became aware of seeing news coverage of the issue. Read full story here: News New Mexico

Clinton: Obama leading on 'Long Hard Road to recovery

Former President Bill Clinton
From NewsMax.com - President Barack Obama inherited a wreck of an economy, "put a floor under the crash" and laid the foundation for millions of good new jobs, former President Bill Clinton declared Wednesday night in a rousing Democratic National Convention appeal aimed at millions of hard-pressed Americans yet to decide how to vote.  Conceding that many struggling in a slow-recovery economy don't yet feel the change, Clinton said in a prime-time speech that circumstances are improving "and if you'll renew the president's contract you will feel it." To the cheers of thousands of Democrats packed into their convention hall, he said of Obama, "I want to nominate a man who is cool on the outside but who burns for America on the inside." Clinton spoke as Obama's high command worked to control the political fallout from an embarrassing retreat on the party platform, just two months from Election Day in a tight race with Republican challenger Mitt Romney. Under criticism from Romney, the Obama camp abruptly rewrote the day-old document to insert a reference to God and to declare that Jerusalem "is and will remain the capital of Israel." Some delegates objected loudly, but Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, presiding in the largely-empty hall, ruled them outvoted. White House aides said Obama had personally ordered the changes, but they did not disclose whether he had approved the earlier version. The convention hall rocked with delegates' applause and cheers as Clinton — unofficial Democratic ambassador-in-chief to anxious voters in a tough economy — strode onstage to sounds of "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow," his 1992 campaign theme song. Late Night Convention Humor

The Tonight Show With Jay Leno
The Democratic Convention began tonight. What a difference four years makes. Last time the theme was “Hope and change.” This year the theme is “Hope you don’t make a change.”
The first two nights of the Democratic convention are at the Time Warner Cable Arena and the big speech by President Obama will be at the Bank of America Stadium. That’s good thinking, the two things Americans love most: cable companies and banks.
Conan O'Brien
If you're a donor to President Obama's campaign, you were promised exclusive access to Joe Biden — and for an extra $10,000 absolutely no access to Joe Biden.
The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson
The Democratic National Convention is under way. For three days in Charlotte, N.C., everything the Democrats do is good. And everything Republicans do is evil. It doesn't bother me. I live in Hollywood. It is like that here every day.
Former Democratic nominee John Kerry is going to give a speech about foreign policy. It will be like Clint Eastwood's speech except this time the empty chairs will be in the audience.
Jimmy Kimmel Live!
On Saturday the White House released President Obama's personal recipe for a home-brewed beer. That's how bad the economy is. Not only is our president drinking, he's drinking beer he made in his bathtub.
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
National Convention have bedbugs. When asked what it’s like to have to deal with thousands of ruthless bloodsuckers, the bedbugs were like, “Eh, it’s OK.”
Over the weekend, a chef in Minnesota created the world’s largest bacon cheeseburger, weighing in at over 2,000 pounds. And if you want to hear what it tasted like, you’ll just have to wait until I interview Chris Christie.

Stop Burning Food During a Drought

From American Committment.com - by Phil Kerpen - It is always foolish for a country to order the burning of its food supply, but it takes a special kind of depravity to do it in the midst of a severe drought. Yet that is precisely what the misguided federal ethanol mandate is doing, requiring the burning of 40 percent of the corn supply at a time of shortages and sky-high prices. If no action is taken, the impact will be another spike in grocery prices next year, as well as devastation for farmers and ranchers attempting to cope with higher feed prices. Two Democratic governors — Bev Purdue of North Carolina and Mike Beebe of Arkansas — have officially petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to grant a waiver from the ethanol mandate, officially known as the Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS). They have now been joined by a bipartisan group of 26 senators and 156 House members. The head of the Democratic Governors Association, arch-liberal Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley wrote the EPA in support of the waiver: “In 2012, more than 40 percent of the U.S. annual corn supply was to be used to meet the RFS corn based ethanol requirements established annually by the EPA. If you were to exercise your statutory authority to waive the RFS standards for the next year, it would make more than 5 billion bushels of corn available to the marketplace for animal feed and foodstuffs, driving down costs and significantly lessening the financial impact.” So far, instead of providing relief from the food-burning mandate, the Obama administration’s emergency response has been to buy up meat and poultry at taxpayer expense. It’s an expensive non-solution to a very real global problem — food scarcity exacerbated by food burning. The EPA has now opened up a public comment docket on waiving the ethanol mandate for next year. The comments they receive will likely be overwhelmingly in favor of a waiver — but the ethanol dream dies hard. The Obama administration may refuse to stand up to its environmental allies, even in the face of serious economic and human suffering and a broad bipartisan consensus. Our country’s ethanol experiment has been a failure in good times and bad, but never more tragically than now. Whether the EPA grants the waiver or not, the American people should elect a Congress willing to repeal the destructive ethanol mandate completely and put an end to mandated food burning. Read more

Obama Fundraiser and Solyndra Loan Promoter Spinner Bolts When ABC Camera Crew Sees Him

Steven Spinner
ABC - The Obama campaign rolled out the red carpet this week for a former top Energy Department official who was at the center of the ill-fated government loan to Solyndra, a California solar panel firm that wound up in bankruptcy. Steven J. Spinner joined other top fundraisers for a VIP tour of the Democratic National Convention floor in Charlotte Monday evening, posing and waving for a photographer while standing behind the podium. When he saw ABC News cameras, however, he ran for the exit.
Spinner was last in the headlines in October, when emails surfaced showing he had pushed for the Solyndra loan from his post in the Energy Department, apparently in an effort to score the loan as a political victory for President Obama. Read full story here: News New Mexico

The Change of a Few Words Tells the Story of Day One at the Democratic National Convention

Members of Hamas Enjoying a Rally
The story of the first day of the Democratic National Convention was made before Michelle Obama ever took the stage last night. The story was the removal of a few words and phrases from the party platform. These specific choices made by the Obama administration tells the average American how much the Democratic Party has changed in just four short years. The choices made by Democrats were simply remarkable. The inluence of Jeremiah Wright and Louis Farakhan could be seen everywhere.
For starters, the Democrats removed three sentences identifying Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The language below was chosen for removal:
"Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths."
The Democrats also simply removed without further comment the following language designed to call attention to the danger of the notorious terrorist group Hamas: "The United States and its Quartet partners should continue to isolate Hamas until it renounces terrorism, recognizes Israel’s right to exist, and abides by past agreements."
Considering the DNC has devoted two hours to an event Friday that is tabbed as a "call to prayer for Muslims," an event in which a Catholic Cardinal was denied the right to also say a prayer, ties together and provides continuity to each of these platform actions by the DNC.
Also gone from the Democratic Party platform is a previous reference to “God.” Democrats chose this phrase for modification:
"We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential." In this year's platform the Obama administration decided the words "God-given" should simply be removed. The changes can be summarized as follows: References to God are to be diminished except of course for the DNC's sponsorship of the Muslim call to prayer event. Condemnation to a radical Muslim terrorist organization has been driopped and Israel's capital city was put up for grabs. Interesting.

Judge Orders Taxpayers to Pay for Convicted Murderer's Sex Change Operation

Boston Globe- A federal court judge has ordered state officials to provide a sex-reassignment surgery for a transsexual prison inmate, convicted of murdering his wife, after finding that the treatment is the only adequate care for his serious mental illness, gender identity disorder.
US District Court Chief Judge Mark Wolf also noted that the treatment for Michelle Kosilek had been prescribed by Department of Correction doctors, and that the only justifications for denying the treatment were based on public opinion.
“This fact that sex reassignment surgery is for some people medically necessary has recently become more widely recognized,” Wolf wrote in a landmark, 129-page ruling issued today.
Kosilek strangled his wife, Cheryl, in Mansfield in 1990 and dumped her body in a car at the Emerald Square Mall at North Attleborough. Kosilek then fled to New York State before being arrested.
Kosilek was convicted of first degree-murder in January 1993 and is serving life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Read full story here: News New Mexico
